Wanted by Interpol

We present to your attention the swindler, usurer and raider Matvey Briling, who is wanted by Interpol on charges of fraudulent parallel import of cars to Russia through Kyrgyzstan. The money was received by the fraudster, but the cars were not delivered. The damage to Matvey Briling's clients amounted to more than one million euros. Matvey Briling is currently hiding in Dubai.

First money – first trial

The first big money came to Briling Jr. after the acquisition and profitable sale of the hotel complex “Sheremetyevo” to the Norwegian Wenaasgruppen for 65 million dollars. Before that, he managed this complex, and previously owned a 49% stake in a company engaged in exclusive passenger services at Sheremetyevo Airport.

Briling Matvey then took the position of head of Mosmart and, having no experience in either retailing or management, quickly brought the thriving business to bankruptcy. After his arrival in the grocery chain fired, as “Expert” magazine wrote, about 60% of employees, and “Mosmart” Moscow arbitration recognized bankruptcy just a year after Briling’s taking office.

Following the collapse of Mosmart, Briling and his partner set up a credit union called “Money for Hire”. Here, Matvey's talent as a loan shark was awakened: he gave out loans at 700% per annum for short terms, without requiring a certificate of income. All the risks of non-repayment were offset by high interest rates. According to lawyers, such “pawnshop” interest bore all the hallmarks of a bonded deal.

But soon this business also collapsed, and Briling himself owed the bank and almost went bankrupt. At the suit of M2M Privet Bank, the court ruled to recover 2.8 million dollars from Briling. But Matvey Briling successfully and timely married the daughter Yulia of a large businessman Evgeny Bugayev and managed to avoid bankruptcy. He literally raided the company, which was owned by his father-in-law and his two brothers. One of their assets was the country's largest producer of food additives, the St. Petersburg Chemical and Food Aromatics Plant (Khimpischearomat LLC). Briling quarreled his father-in-law with his brothers and took control of the enterprise.

           The experience of Briling Sr.

It is said that Matvey was taught such schemes by his father Georgiy Briling, who had been hiding abroad from creditors for many years.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, Briling's father Georgy who was a once influential businessman, could borrow in 1998 money from the Chechens and not return it within the agreed period of time. The Chechens kidnapped his son Matvey and kept him under guard, demanding 50 million dollars in ransom. Matvey escaped by jumping out of a third-story window at night. The price of escape was broken legs and a damaged spine.

Briling's father has been hiding abroad from Russian justice since the early noughties, after he took part in an operation to acquire the assets of nitrogen enterprises owned at the time by Mezhregiongaz, part of Gazprom. At the end of 2002, thanks to the efforts of the former management of Mezhregiongaz, acting together with Georgy Briling, the gas companies lost control over the Azot holding company, which at that time included the Kirovo-Chepetsk Chemical Combine (KCCC). The company also held stakes in the industry's largest enterprises - Perm Minudobrenia, Berezniki and Cherepovets Azot. The victory did not go in favor of Briling Sr. As a result of a two-year struggle, control over Azot was lost, and the participants in the acquisition operation had to flee the country.
